Because of this, gem silica is often confused with or misrepresented as chrysocolla when in fact they are two different gemstones with very different characteristics. The hardness of chrysocolla is only a 2-3 on the Mohs scale, but gem silica is much harder at nearly 7 on the Mohs scale because of its chemical makeup.
